Another Eden

I recently picked up Another Eden, a story-based and artistic JRPG mobile game that follows the adventures of Aldo as he searches for his sister, Faye, through the annals of time.

I was initially very impressed with the movement, which is extremely fluid compared to other mobile games that I've played that have an overworld component. The story is also quite well-written with mildly interesting dialogue interspersed with humor. I thought the prologue of the game was most enjoyable because you had to talk to all of the NPCs to find the "quests", which would be small tasks such as playing hide-and-seek with a village child and finding a replacement for a little girl's balloon. This component of the story is largely eliminated in the subsequent chapters of the story, however, with the introduction of quest markings and prompts.

I thought it was a nice touch that they allowed you to choose the result of your first gatcha roll among a selection of 4 star characters. This eliminates the need/desire to reroll, especially since the first gatcha attempt comes quite far into the tutorial gameplay. Despite the thrill and enjoyment that I normally obtain from gatcha systems, I think that having a gatcha system in this game felt out of place. Each gatcha character has a personal story quest that you can complete that highlights parts of their characters, however other than this component it is impossible to interact with the gatcha characters at all (at least at the point of the game where I am at). Customization of their skills and stats is also incredibly limited, so I would have preferred being bound to a small handful of characters rather than the money-grab scheme that is the gatcha system.

Although there are skip options if you reengage in a large story cutscene, or the cutscene prior to a boss fight, there are no skip options for NPC dialogue - a point I found incredibly annoying and time consuming as many of the quest related dialogues are interspersed with pauses and actions. On another note, it also felt strange to me that completion of the quests would only award you items and gemstones (for the gatcha) and no immediate party-wide character experience.

So far I'd say that I'm enjoying the game overall (although I half-heartedly wish there was an autobattle function since the battle gameplay is quite time-consuming and the mechanics for choosing character skills is not very streamlined). I'm not sure if I would recommend it because I'm struggling to find motivation to complete it, but I definitely think that it's an interesting new game that is taking mobile JRPGs a step in the right direction.

3.75/5 - not sure if I would recommend
